Resistor 47k Ω
47kΩ quarter-watt carbon film resistor — a high-value part for weak pull-ups, biasing and high-impedance voltage dividers.
Used where drawing even half a milliamp matters, such as battery circuits that must idle for months, or where a high-impedance input needs a reference without loading it.
Where it is used
- Low-power pull-ups in battery projects
- High-impedance voltage dividers for analog inputs
- Biasing networks around op-amps and sensors

Questions about the Resistor 47k Ω
When would I choose 47kΩ over 10kΩ for a pull-up?
When current draw matters more than noise immunity. At 5V a 47k pull-up draws about 0.1 mA against 0.5 mA for a 10k, which is worth having in a battery project that idles for months. The trade-off is that the higher impedance is more susceptible to electrical noise, so keep the wire short.
Can I use it in a voltage divider for an analog input?
Yes, and it is a common choice. Bear in mind that an Arduino's ADC prefers a source impedance below about 10k, so very high-value dividers can read slightly low unless you allow settling time.
What do the colour bands mean?
Yellow, violet, orange, gold — digits 4 and 7, multiplied by one thousand, at 5% tolerance.
