Push Button (Tactile)

৳5

6 by 6 mm tactile momentary switch, breadboard friendly, with a positive click. The standard input button for any project.

Four pins, but only two circuits — the pins on each side are permanently joined inside. Knowing that saves a great deal of debugging on a first build.

What you can build

  • Reset, mode and menu buttons
  • Game controllers and keypads
  • Any manual trigger for a microcontroller input

Not sure it will work? Test your circuit free in Tekko Sim — on your phone, in Bangla or English.

Questions about the Push Button (Tactile)

Why does my button seem permanently pressed?
Almost certainly the pin pairing. A 4-pin tactile switch has two pins on each side permanently connected to each other, and pressing the button joins the two sides. If you wire across an already-connected pair, the circuit is closed all the time. Use pins that are diagonally opposite and the problem disappears.
Do I need a pull-up resistor?
The input needs to be held at a known level when the button is not pressed, otherwise it floats and reads randomly. Either add a 10kΩ pull-up, or use INPUT_PULLUP on an Arduino and wire the button to ground.
What is switch bounce and does it matter?
The contacts chatter for a few milliseconds on every press, so one push can register as several. It matters as soon as you are counting presses. Fix it by ignoring further changes for about 50 ms after the first, or use a debounce library.
