Resistor 10k Ω
৳2
10kΩ quarter-watt carbon film resistor — the default pull-up and pull-down value in almost every digital circuit.
High enough to waste almost no current, low enough to hold a floating input firmly. If a circuit calls for a pull-up and does not say what value, it means this one.
Where it is used
- Pull-up and pull-down on buttons and digital inputs
- The data-line pull-up on a DHT11 or DHT22
- Voltage dividers and potential divider references

Questions about the Resistor 10k Ω
Why is 10kΩ the standard pull-up value?
It is a good compromise. At 5V it draws only 0.5 mA when the input is pulled to ground, so it wastes almost nothing, while still being low enough to overcome the leakage and stray capacitance that would otherwise leave the pin floating and reading randomly.
Do I need one if the microcontroller has internal pull-ups?
Often not. INPUT_PULLUP on an Arduino enables an internal resistor of roughly 20k to 50k, which is fine for a button. An external 10k is firmer and is still worth adding on long wires, noisy environments or an I2C bus.
What do the colour bands mean?
Brown, black, orange, gold — digits 1 and 0, multiplied by one thousand, at 5% tolerance.
