Resistor 1kΩ

৳2

1kΩ quarter-watt carbon film resistor — the standard value for driving a transistor base and for light-duty pull-ups.

One of the three or four values worth always having in a drawer, since it appears in almost every transistor switching circuit.

Where it is used

  • Base resistor when a microcontroller pin switches a transistor
  • Voltage dividers and signal attenuation
  • Very dim LED indicators where visibility barely matters

Questions about the Resistor 1kΩ

Why does a transistor need a base resistor?
Without one, the base-emitter junction looks like a forward-biased diode across the pin and draws whatever current the microcontroller can supply, which damages both. 1kΩ from a 5V pin gives roughly 4 mA into the base, enough to saturate a small signal transistor such as a 2N2222 or BC547.
Can I use 1kΩ with an LED?
It will light, but faintly — around 3 mA on a 5V rail. Fine as a subtle indicator inside an enclosure, too dim for anything you need to see across a room.
What do the colour bands mean?
Brown, black, red, gold — digits 1 and 0, multiplied by one hundred, at 5% tolerance.
